Solitary cilia

Most cells in the body produce a single primary cilium. These can be seen by SEM on the surface of human and mouse islets.

Double cilia

Occasionally we observe double or even triple cilia on islet cells. What do these mean and how do they form? Come find out with us.

Ciliary structure

SEM allows us to observe unique structural motifs in islet primary cilia such as helical twists, actin anchors, and ciliary rings. These may represent new cilia functionality not previously appreciated in islet cells.
